Turkey: Actor dismissed from theatre over criticism of government

17 September 2015

Actor Levent Üzümcü has been dismissed from the İstanbul City Theatre after he was recently referred to the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s disciplinary board over a series of statements and speeches he made criticising the government.

Üzümcü announced the disciplinary board’s decision to fire him on his Twitter account, writing: “I am very thankful that, as the decision to dismiss me has proven, I have enough courage to take a stand against injustices [committed by the government].”

He had been referred to the disciplinary board with the request for his dismissal for criticising the government after a series of his tweets and press statements drew attention to the government’s unlawful practices.

The decision to dismiss the actor might mean that he will no longer be able to serve as a public servant at city theatres.
