Tunisia: Two musicians denied access to perform at festival

16 December 2013

The organising committee of the festival L’Angar, supported by Turning Tables in Tunis, announced that entry on Tunisian territory has been denied two of the festival’s scheduled artists: El Rass from Libanon (real name: Mazen El Sayyed) and Al Sayed Darwish from Syria (real name: Sawah).

The unofficial reason was given orally from a representative of the Tunisian Ministry of Culture, to organiser Nejib Abidi (who was arrested earlier in 2013), stating that the two rappers have been labeled as coming from ‘terrorist’ countries. El Rass has performed previously on numerous occasions in Tunisia.

The festival L’angar featured the first interregional lineup with artists such as Tunisian censored Klay BBJ, Boikutt (POLAND), The Narcycist (IRAQ/CANADA) and Den Sorte Skole (DENMARK).
