Russia: Pussy Riot members detained three times

22 February 2014

Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, who spent nearly two years in prison for protesting against Putin in a church, said they had been detained three times while trying to film a new music video in Sochi just before the Olympic Games were to begin.

This is the first music video to be published by the protest group Pussy Riot since two of its members were freed from prison in December 2013. The video was released on youtube.com on 19 February 2014, titled ‘Putin will teach you how to love the motherland’

“They were put to the floor and beaten and physical force was used to them when they refused to be questioned without the presence of their lawyer, who was on his way to the police department,” Nadezhda Tolokonnikova’s husband, Petr Verzilov, told Russian reporters.

The video shows five Pussy Riot group members being beaten by Cossacks with a whip as they try to perform a song beside a wall covered in the Sochi Games logos.
