Veteran Nigerian musician and social critic Osayomore Joseph has reportedly been abducted by unknown gunmen and is being held for ransom. The musician was abducted on 3 October 2017 at his residence in Orovie village, near the Edo State capitol Benin City in Nigeria, shortly after performing at the coronation anniversary of His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare II, the traditional leader of Benin Kingdom, reported Nigerian news outlet The Guardian.

Freemuse condemns the abduction of Osayomore Joseph and calls on Nigerian security agencies to not only secure his release, but do more to protect artists, who should be able to perform and live their lives without fear.

The musician’s family was contacted by the kidnappers who demanded a ransom of 200 million Naira (approx. $555,000 USD), reported Nigerian news outlet Vanguard.

During the incident, the musician’s wife was shot and has been receiving treatment at a hospital.
